This year's Salt Lake Eat Local Challenge began August 28, 2010! Join the celebration of local healthy choices by eating food that is produced no more than 250 miles from your home. Learn how others have participated so you can chart a course that will work for you. You can find food sources, events, books, and articles below.
1. Gather your leftover vegetable & flower seeds from last year.
2. Have no seeds? Come anyway and we’ll give you some to start.
3. Bring your friends to the Seed Swap.
4. Trade or donate your seeds with local garden enthusiasts & farmers.
5. Use your new seeds to start or expand your space with variety.
Also accepting non-perishable donations for local food banks.
Developing a greater awareness about our food—that’s what the Eat Local Challenge is about. While the “standard” Challenge is described as consuming only foods from within a 250 mile radius for a whole month, whatever makes this experience fun and educational (and a challenge to you) is valid.
Is this your first year for the whole family? Consider doing one week of completely local. Are you feeling really strapped for time and realizing that there are really no ready-made meals available locally? Try choosing a couple of food groups such as produce and meats and just be true to those. (You’ll save time on not having to make pasta or bread.)
However you challenge yourself this year—have fun and enjoy learning about your food consumption!
This blog is written by authors who are interested in building community while supporting our local economy and global ecology.

Come to a pasta making party at our house! Monday, July 30, 6PM.
Please bring 10$ for local flour, something to store your pasta in for freezing, etc., and any other additives you'd like in your pasta! We will make a variety and if you have a pasta maker too, please bring it along. We have room for 10 people so please RSVP and we'll give you more details: heidinger@comcast.net
On August 4th there will be a wild edibles and medicinals class. We will meet at the western end of the Smith's Marketplace parking lot on 3300 south next to REI at 7:00am to go up to East Canyon near Little Dell Reservoir.
In this course we will wander through scrub, wetlands, meadows, and riparian zones in search of wild greens, fruits, roots, and seeds. The focus of the class is not to gather necessarily (though we will definitely be doing some) but to identify useful plants found in the Wasatch and throughout the Rockies. We'll also look at how best to preserve and use the plants we find along the way. Be prepared to spend time in the mountains (i.e. water, snacks, some good walking shoes, your loved one). Please avoid wearing bright colored clothing as we want to blend in with the place as we go along and gather. We'll finish up around noon or so.
Please email me, Jacob at jacobhansen76@yahoo.com or call #703-4252 to let me know you are coming. I think it is best to keep the group small to 6 or 7 folks. If there is enough interest we'll do it again for those who couldn't make it this time around.
Small House, BIG PARTY!
Please join us for the Kick-off Party at our place, Saturday, Aug. 18th 7PM.
Here's what to bring:
Your most favorite dish made from entirely local ingredients within 100 or 250 miles (please label it as such).
The recipe for that wonderful morsel you have chosen to share.
Your own dinnerware.
We've found some great local drink possibilities and will have some available, but please bring something as well.
If you have a t-shirt design, bring it and we can vote on a winner and decide if we want to get it printed on tees!
We'll post our address and more later.
P.S. That same night, starting at 6PM WCG will be having a Salsa Contest, so that could be a fun way to start your evening (especially if you have a local salsa you'd like to enter!)See their website for details: http://www.wasatchgardens.org/#

heidinger@comcast.net
When: Sat., August 18, come anytime after 7PM (This should give you time to attend WCG's Salsa Party, and even enter a salsa for details check out: http://www.wasatchgardens.org/)
What to Bring:
A dish to share made from all local ingredients and marked as being within 100 or 250 miles.
A hard copy of the recipe of the dish you brought (we'll post them for people to copy down). Some utensils, plates and/or bowls to enjoy the fine vittles with!
Any type of drinks you'd prefer.
Any extra food you would like to trade for other food, i.e. we'll have flour (lots of unbleached and whole wheat) and maybe cucumbers and herbs.
A t-shirt design if you've got an idea... maybe we can get grocery bags instead?
We'll take care of the rest and can't wait to see you all!
Until then, good luck in your preparations,
Mike and Andrea
CAN YOU BELIEVE IT HAS ALMOST BEEN A MONTH???
Yup, that is right, Tuesday, September 18 marks a month of eating within 100/250 miles of SLC. It has been a short and sometimes long road so it calls for a celebration, one last Hoorah! Please join us at our place for a potluck extradinaire (we'll supply the dishes this time!). Just bring a local dish (must have ingredients that are from less than 250/100 miles away only!) to share and something non-local that you really missed. Wrap that non-local food up and at the end of the evening we'll exchange the mystery foods with one another! Please RSVP if you are coming to: heidinger@comcast.net
